Annaul fest of NIT Warangal, TECHNOZION-XI presents you
Event "NIRMAAN"!!!
ABSTRACT:
“Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do.”
The devastation caused during major earthquakes be it Haiti or Bhuj, were the direct consequence of decades of unsupervised construction. In India the Brahmaputra, the whole Gangetic plain and the Punjab are the worst places where more than 50 million lives are at stake. These disasters can be as frequent as you have seen in Japan. There is an urgent need to build structures which can withstand these disasters.
“Are we going to wait for a massive disaster before we wake up?”
Here is a chance to give free rein to your technical and creative vision.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Model a G+3 structure using MDF and other materials provided by us (see Specifications) according to given specifications. First round is the design submission based on which structurally sound designs will be selected for final round. Final round is building the structure STRICTLY as per the submitted design and its testing. The structure should be able to withstand vibrations without any structural failure.
Material Provided :
· 35 MDF sticks 60 cm length, having cross-sectional dimensions as 6 mm x 5 mm.
· A4 size paper sheets
· Thread (one spool)
· Fevicol (one bottle)
· Stationary items
· A Single Square MDF base for your model 5 mm thick and of dimension 25 cm x 25 cm. The holes will be drilled to help fix your model to it as per your submitted design.
Rules:
1. A team should comprise a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 members.2. The model must have at least 4 horizontal floors (including ground
floor i.E. G+3), with MDF edge beams defining all boundaries of the
floor. A flat roof will be treated as a floor.
3. The distance between the top of any floor and the bottom of the
floor structure above must be at least 15cm (i.E. the clear distance).
4. You must leave at least 25mm clear around the edges of the base
board of 25cm*25cm to which your model will be fixed. The base board
will be used to fix your model to the shaking table.
5. The minimum area of the top three floors together should be 750
square centimeters (excluding the ground floor area). Minimum area of any floor must be 200 sq cm. The floor area includes the space taken by the columns.
6. Holes can be drilled in the MDF board in order to fix the structure
to the base board (Drill Bits will be arranged).
7. For each storey of your model, half the length of the outside
perimeter must be left completely clear of any materials between the
top of one floor and the bottom of the floor above.
i.E. 50% of outer surface of the walls of each floor should be free
from any materials.
8. Each floor of your model must be able to carry a load of 10 grams
for every square centimeter of its area. Weights (Iron blocks/ Iron plates) will be used for loading the structure.
So each floor must have some transverse beams (as per the design) so that the plates stay static while loading and testing (beneficial for your own structure). Also to keep the plates in position, each floor must have a parapet wall kind of thing of at least 6 mm height (stick's breadth).
9. Loading at the ground floor will only be done if MDF edge beams have
been provided at the ground floor to support the structure.
ROUNDS:
The event has two rounds: (1) Prelims- Design submission round and (2) Final- Model Building round as per the submitted design.
1. Prelims- Design submission round: All the interested teams have to submit a design of their structure on or before 15th September, 2011. This design can be an AutoCAD file or photo of sketch of the model (of front, side and top views). Please make sure your designs are designed keeping in mind the limited material provided. No teams will be provided with any sort of extra material. The submitted designs will be scrutinized to check if they abide by the rules of the event and best structurally sound designs will be selected for the final round. All technical calculations should be clearly shown along with the designs(Rigidity, Elasticity and other technical data that may help your structure stand out of the crowd.)
Mail your complete designs at nirmaan.Technozion@gmail.Com. Incomplete designs will not be considered for evaluation.
2. Final- Model Building round: The teams holding selected designs will have to build the real model using the material provided in Technozion- XI (23-25 Sep, 2011). The model should strictly abide by the rules and specifications and should resemble the design submitted in the first round in all aspects (Technical also). Any violation will lead to the disqualification of the team. Also any change in the team during the final round will not be entertained. The model is expected to be built within the given time (that will be informed in the beginning of this round). No extra material or time will be given to any team.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
Loading :
CALCULATION for no. of blocks/weights for loading -
let, the area of one floor =260sq. cm.
load on floor = 260*10 = 2600 gms
This load will be applied in the form of iron plates or blocks.
Failure Criteria :
During the shaking-table test, a model will be
judged to have failed for any of the following conditions:
1. Complete collapse of the model.
2. At least one of the floors collapses.
3. The connections between the columns and the base are such that
rocking of the model building occurs. (Note that sliding at the base
is permitted).
4. More than half the columns fail where they connect to the base.
5. Any other failure that the judges decide would cause deaths within a building.
THE DECISION OF THE JUDGE WILL BE FINAL AND ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS WILL NOT BE ENTERTAINED.
