This is a call for applications for full-time research scholarships for one PhD student and one Masters Student in Public Policy and/or Science Communication at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Successful candidates will undertake separate research thesis projects as part of a Royal Society of New Zealand's Marsden Grant-funded study entitled Sustainable Citizenship: Transforming Public Engagement on New and Emerging Technologies.
The impacts and risks of new and emerging technologies ranging from transgenic to nanotechnology have sparked both euphoria and protests by citizens. Such polarizations not only endanger the goals of a sustainable future but also hinder policy making on new technologies.
This project aims to theorize and implement a concept of sustainable citizenship which works towards a deliberated set of shared values that emerge from a clash of ideas rather than through routine dialogues on issues relating to new technologies. The overall project has two interweaving strands - one focusing on an equitable and yet implementable policy design on new and emerging technologies and the other on effective science communication.
